Companion & Homemaker Services

The hours of the day that feel long when you're alone — we fill them with conversation, support, and help around the house. So your loved one stays independent, engaged, and safe.

What's Included

Our companion and homemaker services are designed for clients who don't (yet) need hands-on personal care but do benefit from regular company and a little help around the house. A typical visit might include any combination of:

Companionship

  • Conversation and active listening
  • Playing cards, games, or puzzles
  • Reading aloud — books, mail, newspapers
  • Going for walks, sitting on the porch, watching the birds
  • Accompanying on errands or social outings
  • Helping stay connected with family — video calls, letters, photos

Meal Preparation

  • Planning meals around dietary needs and preferences
  • Grocery shopping (with or without the client)
  • Preparing and serving home-cooked meals
  • Assisting with feeding when needed
  • Kitchen cleanup and food storage

Light Housekeeping

  • Laundry, bedding changes, folding and putting away
  • Dishes, wiping down counters and surfaces
  • Sweeping, vacuuming, mopping (light duty)
  • Trash and recycling
  • Keeping walkways and common areas clear of tripping hazards
  • Organizing mail, bills, and paperwork

Medication Reminders

Our caregivers can prompt your loved one to take medications as prescribed and help fill weekly pill organizers. We don't administer medications — that's a skilled nursing task — but reminders prevent missed doses, which are one of the most common reasons for hospitalizations in older adults.

Who Benefits Most

Companion and homemaker services are a great fit for:

  • Older adults living alone who are socially isolated
  • Clients with early-stage cognitive changes who need prompts and supervision
  • People recovering from surgery or illness who need a little help for a few weeks
  • Spouses who want a break while knowing their partner has company
  • Adult children who live out of town and want eyes and ears on a parent
  • Clients using IRIS or Family Care for supportive home care

Sometimes the smallest thing makes the biggest difference. A warm meal and a friendly conversation three days a week can turn a lonely month around — and keep small problems from becoming big ones.

How It Works

  1. Free consultation — we come to the home, meet your loved one, and listen.
  2. Personalized plan — we write out what the caregiver will help with and when.
  3. Caregiver match — personality and interests matter more than you'd think for companion care. We take this part seriously.
  4. Visits begin — we document each visit and stay in touch with family.
